Could Hillenkoetter's Writing Style Authenticate the Briefing?

Introduction
Stanton Friedman’s linguistic argument for the alleged MJ-12 Eisenhower Briefing Document was useful in a limited way: it asked whether the document’s prose was compatible with Rear Admiral Roscoe Hillenkoetter’s known writing. Friedman assembled archival Hillenkoetter material and had linguist Roger Wescott compare it with the disputed briefing. That finding mattered because a glaringly alien writing style would have strengthened the case for forgery. But compatibility is not identification. Wescott later stressed that the document’s fraudulence was unproved and its authenticity was equally unproved. How Friedman built the comparison
The exercise began with a sensible authentication question. If the 18 November 1952 briefing really had been prepared by Hillenkoetter, as the document represented, its language might share recognisable habits with his genuine correspondence. Hillenkoetter was not an arbitrary comparison figure: he had been Director of Central Intelligence from 1947 to 1950 and the first director of the newly created CIA.[CIA]cia.govHistory of CIAHistory of CIA - CIA…
Friedman said that, at attorney Robert Bletchman’s suggestion, he obtained 27 examples of Hillenkoetter’s writings from the Truman Library. Wescott was then given those samples and the disputed Eisenhower briefing. The contemporary July 1988 MUFON UFO Journal described the method as “stylistics”, comparing features of written language such as characteristic syntax and design. That archival comparison set was one of the stronger features of Friedman’s approach. He was not simply asking whether the briefing sounded vaguely like a 1950s government memorandum; he was comparing the disputed text against material attributed to the particular person alleged to have prepared it. Wescott was also a substantial academic figure rather than an investigator recruited solely from UFO circles. He held a Princeton doctorate, had been a Rhodes Scholar, taught linguistics and anthropology at Drew University and had served as president of the Linguistic Association of Canada and the United States.[University of Tennessee at Chattanooga]utc.eduOpen source on utc.edu.
There were nevertheless limitations built into the sample. Genuine documents associated with a senior official are not necessarily pristine samples of that official’s unaided prose. Kevin Randle later raised the reasonable possibility that memoranda issued under Hillenkoetter’s authority could have involved aides, secretaries or staff officers. What Wescott actually concluded
Wescott’s much-cited 7 April 1988 statement was favourable to Friedman, but carefully phrased. That is meaningful as a failure to exclude Hillenkoetter. If Wescott had instead found pervasive syntactic habits incompatible with the genuine comparison material, Friedman would have faced an additional authenticity problem. Wescott did not report such a decisive mismatch. In the narrow logic of Friedman’s defence, therefore, the result removed one possible objection: the briefing did not strike the linguist as demonstrably inconsistent with the Hillenkoetter samples.
But contemporary reporting sometimes pushed the result much further. Philip Klass noted that UFO publications ran headlines presenting Wescott’s work as authentication or validation. His account also preserves an important earlier stage in the exchange: on 3 April 1988 Wescott had characterised the stylistic evidence as inconclusive and described his own inclination in ambiguous cases as effectively treating material as authentic until fraud was demonstrated. Wescott subsequently made his limits considerably clearer. In a letter published in the July/August 1988 International UFO Reporter, he said he had no strong commitment to either side. He explained that he could say the briefing’s fraudulence was unproved, but could equally say that its authenticity was unproved, concluding that inconclusiveness was inherent in the problem. That clarification is crucial. It changes the evidential meaning of the exercise from “a linguist authenticated the MJ-12 briefing” to something much narrower: a linguist did not think the available stylistic comparison established that the briefing was fraudulent.
A second comparison exposed the limits
The value and weakness of stylistic comparison become even clearer from a later analysis commissioned by investigators associated with the Center for UFO Studies. Linguist Jean Pival was supplied with 22 Hillenkoetter exemplars that had also been used as standards in the earlier work. Pival reported “some puzzling deviations” from the comparison writings. In particular, she noticed syntactic structures uncommon in the exemplars and an unusual combination of passive constructions with relatively strong judgemental statements. She contrasted categorical-looking phrases in the briefing with more qualified formulations elsewhere in the disputed document. Yet Pival did not conclude that linguistic evidence proved Hillenkoetter could not have written it. The contrast between Wescott and Pival is more informative than treating either opinion as a verdict. Wescott found no compelling stylistic basis for rejecting Hillenkoetter; Pival found noteworthy deviations but still could not conclusively decide authorship. Both results point towards the same methodological ceiling: prose can be compatible with an alleged author without demonstrating that the author produced the document.
This also explains why the question is not simply whether Wescott was qualified. His academic credentials were strong. The deeper problem is what the test itself could establish from a short disputed government briefing and a limited comparison corpus. A finding of stylistic compatibility cannot distinguish among several possibilities: Hillenkoetter wrote it; another official drafted material that Hillenkoetter edited; multiple people contributed to it; or a later creator deliberately or accidentally produced prose resembling the available Hillenkoetter material.
Why compatibility is weaker than provenance
Friedman himself recognised the imitation problem. It identifies the precise boundary between stylistic evidence and document authentication.
Authorship compatibility asks: Does this text behave linguistically in ways that are plausible for this writer? Provenance asks a different and generally stronger question: Can this physical or archival document be traced through a reliable chain to the office, person and date it claims? A stylistic match cannot supply classification records, an archival filing history, an original copy, contemporaneous distribution records or independent references demonstrating that the document existed in government custody in 1952.
That distinction is especially important for MJ-12 because the wider archival searches did not produce the corroborating record that a stylistic argument could otherwise supplement. The US National Archives reports that searches of Air Force, Joint Chiefs of Staff, Truman and Eisenhower library and National Security Council holdings found no copies of the Eisenhower briefing or references establishing the alleged MJ-12 programme; its searches were negative apart from the separate, disputed Cutler-Twining memorandum.[National Archives]archives.govNational Archives Project BLUE BOOKNational Archives Project BLUE BOOK The FBI likewise records that, after receiving versions of an alleged Majestic-12 document in 1988, its inquiry obtained an Air Force assessment that the document was fake.[FBI]vault.fbi.gov— Federal Bureau of Investigation— Federal Bureau of Investigation
So Wescott’s result works best as a defensive rather than an authenticating argument. It gave Friedman grounds to resist a claim that Hillenkoetter’s known prose obviously ruled out the briefing. It did not reverse the burden of authentication and turn linguistic compatibility into evidence of a secure government origin.
What the writing style could actually tell Friedman
Within Friedman’s defence of the core MJ-12 documents, the Hillenkoetter comparison therefore supports three increasingly cautious propositions.
First, the Eisenhower briefing was long enough to make comparison with alleged authorial habits possible, and Friedman assembled a substantial set of genuine archival material rather than relying on intuition alone. Second, Wescott did not find a stylistic incompatibility compelling enough to exclude Hillenkoetter. The distinction matters when assessing Friedman’s cumulative case. Wescott’s work was stronger than the claim that nobody had compared the briefing with Hillenkoetter’s genuine writing, and it complicates any argument that the prose was self-evidently foreign to him. But it was much weaker than the claim that linguistic analysis authenticated the briefing. The useful conclusion is consequently quite narrow: Hillenkoetter’s writing style could help test whether the alleged briefing was linguistically implausible for him; it could not tell Friedman who actually created the document. For an alleged classified government paper, that gap between compatibility and provenance is decisive. A text can sound like something Hillenkoetter might have written while leaving completely unresolved when, where, by whom and for what purpose the surviving document was produced.
