Did Vannevar Bush's Timeline Fit the MJ 12 Story?

Introduction

Vannevar Bush is one of the more plausible names on the alleged Majestic-12 roster. In September 1947 he was already one of America’s most experienced organisers of military science, and he was moving into a newly created senior defence-research post. Yet the exact dates matter. The alleged MJ-12 briefing says the group was established on 24 September 1947 on the recommendation of Bush and Secretary of Defense James Forrestal. That six-day gap is a useful chronology check, but it is easy to overstate. Bush was already chairing the predecessor Joint Research and Development Board, and, importantly, Truman’s appointment diary records Bush and Forrestal meeting the President together on 24 September. The dates therefore expose a distinction between plausibility and authentication: Bush was exceptionally well placed to advise Truman on secret scientific matters, but his real career does not independently establish MJ-12.

Bush’s real defence-science role

Bush was not simply a prominent civilian scientist whose name happened to fit a UFO story. During the Second World War he had directed the Office of Scientific Research and Development (OSRD), chaired the National Defense Research Committee and occupied positions connecting civilian research directly to military requirements. His wartime responsibilities reached the Manhattan Project and other highly sensitive weapons programmes. The National Security Act of 1947 reorganised this machinery. An official Defense Department history explains that the new Research and Development Board was to advise the Secretary of Defense on scientific research relevant to national security and help ensure adequate research and development on military scientific problems. Forrestal wanted continuity and asked Bush to remain at the head of the reorganised body. This makes Bush a particularly effective name in the alleged MJ-12 narrative. A hypothetical secret problem involving unfamiliar aircraft, propulsion, materials or other advanced technology would naturally seem to require someone with his mixture of scientific authority, military connections and experience with compartmented wartime research. His presence on the claimed roster is therefore historically believable in a general sense.

But that observation cuts both ways. Bush’s qualifications were not secret. His wartime prominence and his post-war defence-science appointments were matters of public and institutional record. The September 24–30 chronology

The most revealing way to examine the claim is to put the relevant dates side by side.

24 September 1947: According to the alleged MJ-12 material, Truman established the Majestic-12 group on this date, following a recommendation by Bush and Forrestal. Something real and potentially important did happen that day: Bush and Forrestal actually met Truman. The Truman Library’s presidential appointment calendar records Forrestal and Bush together with the President at 11.30 am on 24 September, with the meeting arranged at Forrestal’s suggestion.[Harry S. The supposed principal actors were not merely in Washington at the same time; the official diary places them together with Truman on the very date appearing on the disputed document.

Yet the diary does not say that they discussed UFOs, recovered spacecraft or Majestic-12. A recorded meeting establishes opportunity, not subject matter. Given Forrestal’s role in constructing the new National Military Establishment and Bush’s pending position in its research structure, they had an obvious documented reason to discuss defence organisation.

25 September: Truman publicly wrote to Bush about his appointment as chairman of the new Research and Development Board. The letter is unusually useful because it explicitly describes the institutional transition. Truman told Bush that he was pleased Bush would continue in public service as chairman of the board created by the National Security Act and noted that, since the end of the war, Bush had been serving as chairman of the earlier Joint Research and Development Board.[Harry S. This means that on 24 September Bush was not an outsider waiting to enter defence work. He was the incumbent head of the predecessor research organisation and was in the process of moving into the successor board. Calling the six-day difference a simple case of “Bush had no defence-science position yet” would therefore be misleading.

26 September: Truman’s official calendar records the first meeting of the National Security Council with the President. That gathering illustrates how rapidly the machinery created by the National Security Act was becoming operational during precisely the week in question.

30 September: Bush was formally sworn in as chairman of the Research and Development Board. The resulting chronology is therefore more nuanced than a single apparent discrepancy suggests:

The six-day gap is real, but it is a gap between the alleged MJ-12 date and Bush’s formal assumption of the new RDB chairmanship, not between the alleged date and Bush’s involvement in high-level defence science.

Why the mismatch is still worth noticing

The chronology matters most when later descriptions implicitly give Bush’s 30 September status to events dated 24 September. If Bush is described as already heading the new Research and Development Board when MJ-12 was supposedly established, that is technically premature. On the other hand, the original alleged MJ-12 briefing avoids depending heavily on that mistake. There is also evidence that his formal appointment was not an automatic or long-settled formality. There is a further twist. The Bush chronology intersects with one of the separate documentary objections raised against the alleged Truman memorandum itself. Philip J. What the date mismatch can and cannot prove

The September chronology does not, by itself, prove that the MJ-12 papers are forged. Bush was already running the Joint Research and Development Board, was deeply embedded in classified defence science, and demonstrably met Forrestal and Truman on 24 September. Nor does the 24 September meeting prove the MJ-12 story. The Truman Library calendar supplies the participants and time, not an extraterrestrial agenda. The following day’s presidential letter supplies a straightforward documented context: Bush’s transition from the joint War-Navy research board to the Research and Development Board created under the new defence structure.[Harry S. That distinction is particularly important because the broader archival record does not authenticate Majestic-12. Bush’s dates therefore provide a useful but limited test. His biography fits the role extremely well; his formal new appointment comes six days too late to be used casually as his title on 24 September; and his documented meeting with Truman and Forrestal on that exact day prevents the discrepancy from becoming a simple chronological disproof. The safest conclusion is narrower. The real Vannevar Bush explains why the claimed MJ-12 roster can feel historically convincing, while the September 1947 paper trail shows why historical plausibility must not be mistaken for evidence that the secret committee itself existed.
