Where Did the Four Roswell Bodies Come From?

Introduction
The four dead occupants are one of the sharpest dividing lines between the Roswell story documented in July 1947 and the much more elaborate account presented by the alleged MJ-12 Eisenhower briefing. Nothing comparable appears in the surviving contemporary Roswell material identified by later archival searches. The July 1947 newspaper coverage describes debris, its recovery by military personnel and the Army’s rapidly changing explanation; an authentic FBI teletype describes a balloon and radar reflector. Neither mentions bodies, biological remains, a separate occupant site or a scientific recovery team. That absence does not prove that every relevant 1947 record survived. Some Roswell Army Air Field records from the period were destroyed. But it creates a substantial evidential problem for the MJ-12 account: its most extraordinary Roswell detail appears without contemporary corroboration and resembles a body-recovery tradition that entered the published Roswell story decades later.
What the briefing claims about the occupants
The alleged briefing does not make a vague reference to rumours of casualties. It supplies a remarkably specific sequence. A secret recovery operation supposedly began on 7 July 1947 after a rancher reported the wreckage. During the operation, aerial reconnaissance allegedly discovered that four small, human-like occupants had apparently left or been ejected from the craft before it exploded. The document adds forensic-sounding details. All four beings were supposedly dead, with decomposition attributed to predators and exposure during approximately a week in the open. A special scientific team then allegedly assumed responsibility for removing them for examination. These details matter because they transform Roswell from a disputed debris recovery into a claimed biological event. If authentic, the briefing would imply an operation involving several activities beyond anything needed merely to collect wreckage: aerial searching, discovery of a second location, handling of four corpses, specialist scientific personnel, transport and preservation of biological material, and presumably some subsequent chain of custody.
Yet the provenance of the briefing itself gives no independent contemporary support to that narrative. The papers attributed to MJ-12 surfaced decades after Roswell. An account of their provenance records that television producer Jaime Shandera received the Eisenhower briefing on undeveloped 35 mm film in December 1984. The National Archives likewise reports extensive searches for MJ-12 documentation in Air Force, Joint Chiefs of Staff, presidential-library and National Security Council holdings without finding a supporting documentary trail. The four bodies therefore cannot be treated as a contemporary Roswell record simply because the briefing bears a 1952 date. The evidential question is when the information can actually be demonstrated to have existed. For this particular document, the physical trail leads to the 1980s, not securely back to 1947 or 1952.
What the July 1947 record does — and does not — contain
The contrast is clearest when the MJ-12 description is placed alongside reporting produced while the Roswell episode was actually unfolding.
On 8 July 1947, the Roswell Daily Record reported the announcement from the intelligence office of the 509th Bombardment Group that the field had obtained a “flying saucer”. Its account described a rancher contacting the sheriff, Major Jesse Marcel becoming involved and the recovered object being sent onwards to higher headquarters. The article says no details of the disc were revealed. The following day’s reporting became considerably more concrete. Rancher W. W. “Mac” Brazel described scattered rubber and lightweight material — tinfoil, paper, tape and sticks — spread across an area roughly 200 yards in diameter. He estimated that the collected material weighed about five pounds and reported no engine-like metal or propellers. Whatever one makes of Brazel’s insistence that the material did not resemble weather balloons he had previously found, his account is fundamentally a debris-field story. An independent government document from the same news cycle also survives. The General Accounting Office — now the Government Accountability Office (GAO) — authenticated an FBI teletype dated 8 July 1947. It recorded information from Eighth Air Force headquarters describing the recovered object as a hexagonal-shaped disc suspended from a large balloon by cable. The point is not that every contemporary source agrees about what the debris was. They plainly do not: the Army’s initial “flying disc” announcement, Brazel’s doubts about an ordinary weather balloon and the military’s balloon explanation created the contradiction that later made Roswell so durable. What the surviving sources do share is equally important for this narrower question. The dispute in July 1947 concerns debris and its identification. The four-body narrative is absent.
That distinction remained significant when federal researchers revisited the records decades later. The National Archives says the Air Force’s systematic search and interviews found no records that “indicated or even hinted” at recovered alien bodies or extraterrestrial material. The second recovery site changes the evidential burden
The phrase “four bodies” can obscure an even more consequential part of the MJ-12 claim: they supposedly were not at the main wreckage site. That effectively adds another event to Roswell. There would have to be a debris recovery and a separate biological recovery. The second location would potentially involve different witnesses, search personnel, transport arrangements and physical traces. The briefing’s own wording implies an organised reconnaissance effort rather than four bodies accidentally encountered while debris was being collected.
This is difficult to reconcile with the shape of the contemporary reporting. Nor does the FBI’s 8 July communication betray an escalation from unusual wreckage to a biological-security event. None of these documents can establish that no secret second operation could possibly have occurred. Secret programmes can generate deliberately incomplete public accounts. The more defensible conclusion is narrower: the alleged second site has no support in the identified contemporary records cited for the Roswell episode. Its existence therefore depends on much later evidence rather than on documentation demonstrably produced during the incident.
The record gap is real, but it does not supply the missing bodies
There is an important complication. GAO’s 1994–95 investigation found that some Roswell Army Air Field records covering the relevant period had been destroyed. Administrative records covering March 1945 to December 1949 and outgoing messages covering October 1946 to December 1949 were gone. For the four-body claim, this distinction is essential. Missing records create uncertainty about what the complete Roswell administrative file once contained. They do not provide affirmative evidence that the destroyed material concerned alien bodies. The surviving evidence still includes contemporary press reports, the FBI teletype and other records examined by investigators, none of which supplies the missing biological-recovery story. A sound evidence assessment therefore has to hold two propositions together. The surviving official record is incomplete, so claims that “every possible 1947 document survives” would be unjustified. But the incompleteness cannot legitimately be reversed into proof that the missing documents contained the very extraordinary evidence under dispute.
The body story appears in the later Roswell tradition
The chronology becomes more revealing when the 1947 sources are compared with the revival of Roswell decades later. The incident attracted relatively little sustained attention until UFO researchers returned to it in the late 1970s. Charles Berlitz and William L. One influential strand involved the posthumous story attributed to civil engineer Barney Barnett, who was said to have encountered an unusual crashed object and small bodies alongside an archaeological party. Later Roswell narratives accumulated additional alleged body witnesses and alternative crash locations. That chronology does not by itself prove that whoever created the MJ-12 briefing borrowed from The Roswell Incident or another particular source. There is no secure documentary trail establishing exactly where its author obtained the four-body detail. But it does change the evidential significance of the claim.

There is also a revealing difference between the developing folklore and the briefing’s precision. Later Roswell accounts have disagreed about locations, witnesses, numbers and circumstances. What later official explanations can and cannot establish
The US Air Force eventually addressed the body stories directly. That explanation has an obvious limitation: the dummy drops occurred years after 1947. It therefore cannot mean that test dummies literally lay beside the Roswell debris in July 1947. The Air Force’s argument instead concerns the formation of later witness memories — that events from different years could have become combined after decades had passed. This distinction matters because presenting the dummy programme as a direct 1947 explanation would overstate what the official report claims.
For the MJ-12 briefing, however, the more fundamental problem comes earlier than the debate over dummies. The briefing needs independent reason to believe that four bodies were recovered in 1947 in the first place. The surviving July documentation supplies none. Later testimony may be evaluated on its individual merits, and the Air Force’s retrospective explanations may themselves be debated, but neither changes the absence of a contemporary four-body record.
Where the four bodies leave the MJ-12 claim
The four occupants are therefore not merely another colourful detail in the alleged MJ-12 papers. They provide a useful test of how the briefing relates to the historical record.

There is a genuine archival caveat because some Roswell Army Air Field records from the period were destroyed. That does not resolve every argument about what happened near Roswell. It does establish the narrower point that matters here: the four dead humanoids and their separate recovery site belong to the later Roswell narrative, not to the surviving documentary record produced during the events of July 1947.
