Why MJ 12's Leading Zeros Matter More

Introduction

The leading zeros in the alleged MJ-12 Eisenhower Briefing Document are a more specific authenticity problem than its better-known misplaced commas. The document does not merely write dates in the unusual form “18 November, 1952”; when the day has one digit, it systematically pads it to two digits, producing forms such as “01 August, 1950”, “07 July, 1947” and “06 December, 1950”. That objection needs careful wording. Leading zeros existed long before computers and can be found in other countries, specialised numerical systems and later military conventions. The important question is narrower: would a 1952 American briefing attributed to former CIA director Rear Admiral Roscoe Hillenkoetter repeatedly use a zero-padded day in a spelled-out day-month-year date? The period evidence located for this question points strongly towards “normally, no”. More importantly, the same peculiarity later appears in the correspondence of William L. Which MJ-12 dates use zero-padding?

The alleged Eisenhower Briefing Document contains several especially revealing examples because its single-digit days are not treated as ordinary numbers. Among the forms identified by Klass are:

The significance lies in repetition. A single “07” could conceivably be dismissed as an individual typist’s eccentricity, an editing anomaly or an exceptional office practice. Three zero-padded single-digit days in the same document look much more like a deliberate formatting rule. Klass consequently treated the leading zero not simply as a typo but as part of the document’s characteristic dating system. This distinction also helps separate two issues that are often bundled together. “18 November, 1952” contains the controversial comma but gives no opportunity to test zero-padding because 18 already has two digits. “07 July, 1947”, by contrast, displays both disputed features at once: a leading zero and a comma after the month. It is that compound construction, rather than either feature viewed in isolation, that gives the dating objection much of its force.

How period military dates were normally written

Contemporary practice provides a straightforward comparison. The US Government Printing Office’s style guidance gives “15 April 1951” as the military form: day, spelled-out month and four-digit year, with neither a leading zero nor a comma after the month. Surviving government records show the convention in actual use. Those examples do not prove that no American government typist anywhere could ever have typed a leading zero. Government paperwork was too diverse for such an absolute proposition. They do show why the MJ-12 pattern attracts attention: ordinary period examples from the relevant US defence and intelligence environment repeatedly drop the zero precisely where the EBD repeatedly inserts one.

Klass attempted a still tighter comparison by obtaining genuine Hillenkoetter correspondence from the Truman Library. He reported that four Hillenkoetter letters or memoranda from 1948–50 all followed conventional military dating. Three fell on single-digit days, providing direct opportunities for Hillenkoetter to use a leading zero; according to Klass, none did. That is more probative than simply asking what a style manual prescribed. The alleged EBD was supposedly prepared under Hillenkoetter’s authority, so genuine documents associated with Hillenkoetter constitute a closer comparison group than generic government paperwork.

Why the leading zero is harder to dismiss than the comma

The comma objection has a substantial weakness: authentic government documents did not always obey a single punctuation rule. Friedman, the leading defender of the original MJ-12 documents, emphasised precisely this point. He reported finding numerous date formats in archival material and examples in which Hillenkoetter and another CIA director used day-month-comma-year constructions.[Medium]medium.comOpen source on medium.com. If authentic officials sometimes wrote something resembling “18 November, 1952”, then the comma cannot reasonably be treated as an automatic forgery detector.

But that rebuttal does not by itself dispose of “01 August, 1950”. Showing that commas varied establishes variability in punctuation; it does not establish routine zero-padding of a single-digit day in the same spelled-out construction. There are also superficially troublesome counterexamples that illustrate why provenance matters. These examples demonstrate why the sweeping statement that leading-zero dates simply “did not exist” in the 1940s or 1950s is untenable. They are not, however, evidence that a 1952 US intelligence briefing would normally have been typed that way: some are modern archival metadata, and the British examples come from a different administrative tradition.

The relevant benchmark is therefore not “Can any document from around 1950 be found with 01 or 07?” It is whether comparable American military, White House or intelligence documents, particularly Hillenkoetter material, establish the EBD’s repeated construction as a plausible office convention. The evidence cited by critics is considerably stronger on that narrower question.

The Moore correspondence makes the pattern more diagnostic

The most consequential part of the leading-zero argument is not simply that the EBD departed from normal practice. Klass compared the document with correspondence he had received from William L. Moore. According to his chronology, Moore was already using the unusual comma construction in the early 1980s but initially wrote single-digit days without zeros. Around late 1983, Moore began adding the zero. This creates a much more specific resemblance than “both writers sometimes made punctuation mistakes”. The alleged 1952 document uses a combination of:

day first + spelled-out month + comma + year + zero-padding whenever the day is a single digit.

Klass argued that Moore’s correspondence came to exhibit essentially the same combination. A further episode sharpened the allegation. Japanese researcher Jun-Ichi Takanashi noticed the date style in government documents that Moore had retyped for publication and asked Barry Greenwood to compare those versions with the originals in Project Blue Book files. Greenwood subsequently reported that the original dates had been altered in Moore’s transcriptions: commas had been introduced, and in a memorandum originally dated 9 February 1949, the retyped version reportedly became “09 February, 1949” — adding both the zero and the comma.[The UFO Chronicles]theufochronicles.comOpen source on theufochronicles.com.

If that comparison is accurate, it matters because it demonstrates something more concrete than Moore merely having encountered the format elsewhere. It indicates that when reproducing an existing period document, he could spontaneously convert its conventional date into the very kind of construction under dispute in the EBD. That makes the formatting resemblance relevant to possible authorship or transcription habits, even though it cannot by itself establish who produced the MJ-12 document.

Why the combined pattern is more diagnostic

The leading-zero case is strongest when treated as pattern evidence, not as a claim that one forbidden character proves forgery. Government documents can violate style guides. Individual typists can have quirks. Archives contain exceptions. The presence of a zero before a day number therefore cannot independently date a piece of paper.

What changes the assessment is the accumulation of increasingly specific matches. The standard military model was “1 August 1950”. Genuine US defence and intelligence records from 1950 readily show that form. The EBD instead gives “01 August, 1950”, repeatedly combining zero-padding with its already unusual comma. Genuine Hillenkoetter documents examined by critics reportedly did not reproduce that combination. There remains a legitimate caution. Friedman was right to object to arguments that assume all government paperwork followed a single rigid style; his archival examples show genuine variation, particularly in punctuation and date arrangement.[Medium]medium.comOpen source on medium.com. Nor does a shared typographical habit uniquely identify an author. Two people can independently adopt the same unusual convention.

Yet those cautions weaken an absolute “impossible in 1952” claim more than they weaken the comparative argument. The key authenticity question is not whether a leading zero was technologically or typographically possible. It plainly was. It is whether the repeated zero-padding, in combination with the comma and against the practice seen in closely comparable period documents, is what one would expect from the alleged source.

On that narrower test, “01 August, 1950”, “07 July, 1947” and “06 December, 1950” remain unusually damaging details. The comma alone can be answered with examples of inconsistent government punctuation. The leading zeros force a harder comparison with period US military practice, genuine Hillenkoetter material and, most strikingly, Moore’s documented personal formatting habits.
