Yes, a mechanical signing device could in principle explain why two Harry Truman signatures look extraordinarily alike. But that possibility does not establish that the disputed 24 September 1947 Truman–Forrestal memorandum was signed that way. The crucial evidential gap is surprisingly simple: no source located here documents the two relevant 1947 documents — the alleged Forrestal memorandum and Truman’s genuine 1 October letter to Vannevar Bush — being produced together by such a device. Wood himself described the evidence that Truman’s pantograph reached Washington as “murky”. Truman did use mechanical signature technology
There are really two related technologies in this discussion, and distinguishing them prevents confusion. A pantograph or polygraph-style device mechanically links pens so that a person’s movements at one pen are duplicated by another pen, potentially at the same time. A later autopen instead stores a signature pattern and can reproduce it with a pen without the signer physically tracing every copy. There is credible historical evidence connecting the Truman era with automated signing. Contemporary histories of the technology place widespread federal autopen use in or around the Truman administration, although accounts differ over precisely when and how Truman himself used it. A 1989 Los Angeles Times history said use went back to the Truman administration and noted that the Defense Department was an early large-scale user. That distinction is important because the specific MJ-12 defence advanced by Wood is not simply “Truman had an autopen”. Wood argued that Truman had used a master-and-slave pantograph, describing a device with one master pen and five slave pens. In his 2000 MUFON symposium paper, he reproduced a photograph that he said showed Truman using such equipment while signing court papers in 1929, when Truman was a Missouri county judge. There is therefore a solid historical core beneath the defence: mechanically reproduced signatures were technologically possible in Truman’s period, such devices existed within government, and Truman has historical associations with automated or multiple-pen signing. What is not established is the much narrower proposition required by the MJ-12 argument: that a particular multi-pen mechanism produced both signatures at issue in September and October 1947.
How a multiple-pen device could create the match
The attraction of the pantograph explanation is that it addresses a genuine difficulty for anyone defending the Truman–Forrestal memorandum. The disputed signature and Truman’s genuine signature on the 1 October 1947 Bush letter are not merely examples of the same man’s broadly similar handwriting. Critics reported that, after correcting for reproduction differences, they overlay extremely closely. Ordinary handwriting would make such correspondence suspicious because even the same person does not normally execute every stroke identically on separate occasions. A mechanically linked set of pens changes that expectation. If Truman moved one master pen while several slave pens followed its movements, several documents could receive signatures derived from the same physical hand movement. Near-identity would then cease to be automatic evidence that one signature image had been photographically copied from the other.
This is a materially stronger argument than simply saying that Truman happened to sign his name consistently. It proposes an actual mechanism capable of generating extremely close contemporaneous signatures.
There is also an important distinction between a pantograph and a later template-based autopen. A stored-pattern autopen can reproduce essentially the same signature repeatedly on unrelated occasions. A master-and-slave pantograph instead produces multiple physical signatures simultaneously from a single act of writing. That creates the hypothesis’s central historical problem.
The dates make the mechanism harder to apply
The alleged Truman–Forrestal memorandum is dated 24 September 1947. The genuine Truman letter to Vannevar Bush carrying the comparison signature is dated 1 October 1947. If their signatures were simultaneously generated by linked pens, the documents would have had to be physically present for signing at the same time despite bearing dates a week apart.
Wood recognised this issue. His proposed answer was that the date on the questioned Truman–Forrestal memorandum had been inserted separately: he pointed to the date’s alignment as evidence that the sheet had been removed and later returned to the typewriter. A forensic assessment cited by the Woods likewise described the numerals in “September 24, 1947” as sitting above the line and suggested that the paper had been removed between typing the text and adding the date. This makes a mechanically duplicated signature possible as a reconstruction, but it adds another unsupported step. The scenario now requires not merely that Truman possessed the right machine, but that the alleged Forrestal memorandum remained unsigned until around the time of the Bush letter, that both were placed into the same multiple-pen signing operation, and that the earlier date on the Forrestal page was separately inserted or otherwise does not represent its actual signing sequence.
None of those steps is impossible. The problem is that the surviving evidence does not independently document them.
The contrast with an ordinary important presidential signature from the same year is instructive. When Truman was away from Washington and needed to sign the Greek-Turkish aid legislation in 1947, contemporary reporting says the bill was physically flown to him in Kansas City for his signature. The stray mark is the harder test
The most significant challenge to the mechanical-device explanation is not simply the outline of Truman’s name. Critics have emphasised an anomalous small mark associated with the “H” in “Harry” that appears in both the disputed signature and the genuine Bush signature. Philip J. That detail matters because different mechanisms predict different things.
A template-based autopen can naturally repeat peculiarities contained in its stored master signature. A simultaneous multi-pen pantograph can also transmit the same unusual intentional or hand-generated motion to several slave pens. So the existence of an odd stroke is not, by itself, logically incompatible with mechanical signing.
But an accidental artefact produced only on one physical copy is different. A slave pen catching the paper, an ink irregularity or a stray scratch unique to one sheet would not automatically appear on another sheet simply because both pens were mechanically linked. To make the matching anomaly support a pantograph explanation, it would need to result from the common movement transmitted through the apparatus rather than from a paper-specific accident.
This is where access to originals would be especially valuable. The publicly circulated MJ-12 material is reproduced imagery, not two securely preserved original ink signatures that can be examined side by side for pressure, ink flow, microscopic stroke sequence and other physical characteristics. That limitation cuts both ways. It prevents a definitive microscopic demonstration of exactly how the disputed signature was made, but it also prevents the signing-machine defence from being positively verified through physical traces of independent pen execution.
Why the 1947 connection remains unproven
The signing-device hypothesis ultimately has three different evidential levels that should not be collapsed into one.
First, the technology existed. Mechanical signature reproduction was well established by the 1940s, and automated signing spread rapidly through the federal government. Second, Truman had relevant associations with mechanical signing. Sources connect the Truman administration with autopen use, and Wood presented evidence that Truman had earlier used a multi-pen pantograph. It is therefore unreasonable to dismiss mechanical duplication merely because it sounds technologically anachronistic. Third, however, the required connection to these two documents has not been demonstrated. No contemporaneous White House record located in the evidence reviewed here says that the 24 September Forrestal memorandum and 1 October Bush letter were signed in a common mechanical operation. Wood’s own account concedes uncertainty over whether Truman’s earlier pantograph was even brought to Washington. Nor did Wood report finding the especially valuable corroborating example his hypothesis predicts: another contemporaneous Truman signature sufficiently close to these two to demonstrate that the same mechanism was producing a family of near-identical signatures. That missing comparison is important. If multiple genuine Truman documents from the same period carried signatures with the same geometry and characteristic strokes, the claim of routine mechanical reproduction would become much stronger. Conversely, if the Bush letter remains uniquely matched by the disputed MJ-12 signature, photographic transplantation remains the simpler explanation for the pair.
The signing machine is possible, but not demonstrated
The multiple-pen argument therefore succeeds at one limited but worthwhile task: it shows why “these signatures match closely” cannot, in complete isolation, be treated as a mathematical proof of forgery. It does considerably less well as an explanation of this particular match. To account for the Truman–Forrestal and Truman–Bush signatures through a simultaneous multi-pen device, the hypothesis needs a signing session linking documents dated a week apart, an explanation for the dating sequence, and evidence that Truman’s relevant apparatus was being used for those papers in Washington in 1947. The published defence provides possibilities for those steps, but not contemporaneous documentation of them. The fairest conclusion is consequently narrower than either extreme. Truman’s history with mechanical signing makes the multiple-pen explanation technically and historically plausible enough to consider. It does not supply evidence that the alleged 24 September 1947 MJ-12 memorandum was genuinely signed by that method. Until a securely authenticated contemporaneous document, White House record or additional matching signature establishes the missing link, the device remains an alternative mechanism rather than an authentication of the Truman–Forrestal memorandum.
