Rather than depicting a presidential committee created within days of Roswell, the documents imply an intervening period in which information could supposedly have moved through military and technical channels before reaching an institutional decision. There really was wider official investigation of “flying discs” during those weeks. What has not been found is reliable evidence showing that this activity constituted an eleven-week Roswell-to-MJ-12 investigation culminating in Truman’s alleged order. The July 8 Roswell announcement

The useful starting point is 8 July, rather than treating “Roswell” as a vaguely dated event. Contemporary Associated Press reporting stated that the Army Air Forces at Roswell had announced possession of a flying disc recovered from a ranch. An authentic FBI teletype from the same day shows how quickly the matter entered official communications outside Roswell. According to the later Government Accountability Office (GAO) examination, the FBI’s Dallas office was told by an Eighth Air Force official that the recovered object resembled a high-altitude weather balloon with a radar reflector and was being sent to Wright Field for examination. That contemporary trail is significant for the eleven-week question. It establishes that there was immediate military handling and communication concerning the Roswell debris, but it does not establish an immediate presidential organisation. Indeed, GAO’s later search found only two government records originating in 1947 that specifically mentioned the Roswell event: the July history of the 509th Bomb Group/Roswell Army Air Field and the 8 July FBI teletype. The Air Force’s later investigation offered a conventional explanation for the recovered material, identifying it with the classified balloon-borne Project MOGUL programme rather than an extraterrestrial vehicle. Whatever conclusion a reader reaches about that explanation, it reinforces an important distinction for this particular timeline: the documented Roswell episode and the alleged September MJ-12 decision are separate historical propositions. If authentic, those phrases would imply that some planning had preceded the presidential instruction. There is genuine evidence that the US military was investigating the broader flying-disc phenomenon during this period. The FBI says that on 30 July 1947 it instructed field offices that, at the request of Army Air Forces Intelligence, the Bureau had agreed to cooperate in investigations of flying discs. The interval culminated in another genuine document that can make the alleged MJ-12 chronology appear superficially persuasive. On 23 September, one day before the alleged Truman authorisation, Lieutenant General Nathan Twining of Air Materiel Command transmitted his formal opinion concerning “flying discs”. The proximity is striking: Roswell on 8 July, broader investigations during the summer, Twining’s memorandum on 23 September, and the alleged MJ-12 order on 24 September. But chronology alone cannot turn those separate events into a documented causal chain. Twining’s genuine memorandum concerns flying-disc reports generally; the evidence cited for it does not establish that he was reporting an extraterrestrial Roswell recovery or preparing the ground for Truman to create MJ-12. Why September 24 looks unusually well placed

The strongest coincidence comes at the end of the gap. That makes 24 September a much more interesting alleged date than an arbitrary day eleven weeks after Roswell. It supplies a genuine presidential meeting involving the central figures in the purported authorisation story. The supposed Truman memorandum’s reference to a recent conversation also sits neatly beside that historical fact. Yet the authentic appointment entry gives no indication that Roswell, flying discs or Majestic-12 were discussed.[Harry S. The wider calendar also shows how dangerous it is to treat a plausible meeting as proof of its alleged subject. Truman had a crowded programme that day, including Cabinet business and other appointments. The following morning his schedule recorded Bush’s appointment as chairman of the Research and Development Board, placing Bush and Forrestal squarely within the genuine reorganisation of US defence and scientific administration then under way.[Harry S. In other words, the end of the eleven-week interval contains a real historical convergence of Truman, Forrestal and Bush, but no authenticated record connecting their meeting to Roswell. That is exactly the sort of distinction on which the MJ-12 timeline turns: historical circumstances can make an alleged document look contextually convincing without authenticating the extraordinary claim contained in it.

Why the eleven-week interval changes the timeline

Calling MJ-12 a body supposedly formed “immediately after Roswell” compresses the chronology too far. From 8 July to 24 September, the alleged sequence allows more than two and a half months for whatever investigation, technical assessment, consultation or bureaucratic planning the story requires. If one provisionally accepts the narrative told by the disputed documents, MJ-12 therefore looks less like an emergency committee assembled at the moment debris arrived and more like the supposed institutional outcome of a longer investigative process.

That interpretation also creates an evidential problem. A longer process should potentially leave more opportunities for collateral documentation: routing records, memoranda, briefings, correspondence, scientific assessments, presidential files or references in the records of the officials supposedly involved. The disputed Truman memorandum does not fill those 78 days; it merely appears at their end and alludes to earlier discussion. Some Roswell Army Air Field records from the relevant era were destroyed, and GAO noted deficiencies in the surviving record-disposition documentation. There is an additional credibility problem specific to using the alleged MJ-12 papers as the missing link. When copies of the supposed Eisenhower briefing reached the FBI in 1988, an Air Force investigation concluded that the document was fake; the FBI now describes its own conclusion in similarly unequivocal terms. The eleven-week gap itself is straightforward chronology. Roswell’s public “flying disc” announcement occurred on 8 July 1947. At the same time, it makes the absence of an authenticated documentary trail through those intervening eleven weeks more important, because the alleged September order is presented as the culmination of a process whose crucial Roswell-to-White-House steps have never been independently established.
