Introduction
For SOM1-01, the absence of the alleged paper manual is not a minor gap in an otherwise complete authentication exercise. It removes the object on which some of the most discriminating forensic tests would have to be performed. The publicly available evidence derives from photographs on undeveloped 35 mm film anonymously mailed to UFO researcher Don Berliner in 1994; the current SOM1-01 site itself describes its online pages as scans of photographs developed from that film.[SOM1-01]specialoperationsmanual.comOpen source on specialoperationsmanual.com.
That distinction matters because a photograph can preserve visible information — wording, layout, typeface, apparent stamps and some printing irregularities — while failing to preserve much of the physical evidence contained in paper, ink, impressions, fibres and binding. SOM1-01 can therefore be tested for historical and visual consistency, and photographs may expose a decisive anachronism if one is visible. What they cannot do is establish that the photographed sheets themselves were manufactured, printed and assembled in or around 1954. That leaves an unusually important part of the authentication question unresolved.
Physical tests unavailable from photographs
A forensic examiner presented with the alleged SOM1-01 original could ask questions that simply cannot be answered from the surviving photographic record. The National Institute of Justice describes questioned-document examination as including visual and chemical analysis of paper and inks to obtain information about authenticity and creation date. For SOM1-01, the missing original prevents or severely restricts several potentially important lines of enquiry:
- Paper examination. Investigators could study the paper’s composition, fibres, dimensions, surface, manufacture and any watermark or other identifying features. Those characteristics might be compared with documented papers available to US government printers in the claimed period.
- Ink and printing-medium analysis. The material actually deposited on the pages could be examined rather than inferred from its photographed appearance. - Microscopic examination. Magnification of the original could reveal three-dimensional characteristics of printing, impressions and defects that a photographic reproduction may flatten, obscure or alter. - Alteration and assembly evidence. An examiner could look for erasures, substitutions, pasted or otherwise composited elements, differences between inks or printing processes, and physical evidence that pages had been changed. - Binding and construction. The alleged manual is presented as a physical publication, so its fastening, page sequence, trimming, folds, wear and construction could potentially be compared with genuine manuals from the period. Photographs of page faces cannot provide an equivalent examination of the object as an assembled artefact.
This does not mean every such test would yield a precise date. Forensic dating is rarely as simple as determining a document’s year from a single measurement. The important point is narrower: the original would contain independent physical variables capable of supporting or contradicting the claimed period. Without it, those variables are unavailable.
The limitation is recognised even by SOM1-01’s principal authenticity advocates. Robert Wood’s authentication account says that with original paper it would be possible to investigate ink, watermark and paper, but acknowledges that the SOM1-01 evidence available to him did not include that original. Why paper, ink and binding matter
The physical original could address a question that visual comparisons cannot: when and how was the object photographed in 1994 actually made?
Suppose, for example, that microscopic and material analysis found paper, printing materials or manufacturing characteristics introduced only decades after 1954. That would be powerful evidence against the manual’s claimed date regardless of how accurately its author had imitated 1950s terminology and typography. Conversely, finding materials compatible with the early 1950s would remove one important objection — although it would not by itself prove that MJ-12 produced the document.
That asymmetry is important. Period paper can survive unused for decades, and a later fabricator could in principle acquire old stock or reproduce a text using historically appropriate processes. An object made from 1950s materials is not automatically an authentic government document. The same distinction applies to printing. Wood argues from the photographs that SOM1-01 uses a typeface consistent with Monotype Modern and points particularly to apparently raised letters as signs of period Monotype printing. Forensic practice is cautious for exactly this reason. Indiana State Police says original documentary evidence is preferable and urges investigators to make every effort to locate it, although useful examinations can still be made from the best available copy. Binding could add another independent layer. A convincingly photographed page can be manufactured separately; an intact manual has a physical history. Its page edges, fasteners, wear patterns, substitutions and construction might show whether the pages had actually existed together as a working publication. None would automatically establish an MJ-12 provenance, but together they could make particular production histories more or less plausible.
The missing object also breaks the evidential chain
The problem is not confined to laboratory testing. SOM1-01’s publicly documented chain of custody begins with photographic film, not with the alleged 1954 manual.
According to the account maintained by its advocates, Berliner received undeveloped 35 mm film in 1994 in a package without an identified sender. After development, the frames showed pages of SOM1-01. Robert Wood later obtained high-quality prints from the negatives for examination.[SOM1-01]specialoperationsmanual.comOpen source on specialoperationsmanual.com. Whatever the photographs depict, that history does not independently identify who owned the photographed object, where it had been stored, who photographed it, when the photography occurred, or how the object supposedly travelled from government custody to the photographer.
This distinction became central even within UFO research. A 1999 joint statement concerning SOM1-01, associated with Don Berliner and other researchers, highlighted both the anonymous film source and the absence of an original available for forensic analysis as reasons for suspicion.[Google Groups]groups.google.comGroups Joint StatementGroups Joint Statement The dispute therefore is not simply between people who accept or reject the broader MJ-12 story. The evidential weakness created by the missing original was recognised by investigators working directly on the manual controversy.
Claims about where the paper original might have been are not substitutes for possession and examination. The pro-authenticity SOM1-01 site discusses a stamp apparently referring to Building 21 and Unit KB-88 at Kirtland Air Force Base, as well as initials on its change-control page.[SOM1-01]specialoperationsmanual.comOpen source on specialoperationsmanual.com. Those details can be checked for historical plausibility, but they do not establish that the photographed sheets actually passed through that building. A stamp visible in a photograph proves, at most, that the photographed object displayed that stamp.
Wood has also recounted claims that another researcher had physically handled an old-looking copy of the manual and that a Navy yeoman recalled seeing a version decades earlier. What photographic copies can still establish
The absence of paper does not make the photographs worthless. Forensic laboratories do examine non-original evidence when originals cannot be obtained. In SOM1-01’s case, the photographs support several legitimate forms of investigation.
Visible typography and layout can be compared. Researchers can compare letterforms, spacing, headings, pagination, security markings and page design against genuine government publications. Wood’s Monotype argument belongs in this category.[SOM1-01]specialoperationsmanual.comSOM1-01SOM1-01 Overview & AuthenticationSOM1-01December 30, 2014… A sufficiently clear photograph can preserve substantial typographic information even though it cannot reveal everything about the underlying printing process.
The text can be tested for anachronisms. Terminology, abbreviations, institutional names, technical concepts and references can be checked against what existed by April 1954. This kind of analysis requires no original paper because the relevant evidence is the wording itself. Internal consistency can be examined. Page references, the contents list, change-control information, illustrations and repeated terminology can be checked against one another. Visible defects can generate hypotheses. Unusual letter positions, apparent printing faults or inconsistencies between pages can be identified and compared with known examples. What investigators must avoid is treating every feature seen in a photograph as equivalent to a feature established through direct physical examination. This creates a useful distinction between compatibility and authentication. If SOM1-01’s typography, vocabulary and layout are all compatible with a 1954 publication, that makes a crude, historically careless fabrication less plausible. It does not demonstrate that the photographed object was printed in 1954, much less that it originated with a secret government organisation.
What finding the original could change
Recovery of a credible paper original would not automatically settle the SOM1-01 controversy, but it would transform the evidence available for testing. Investigators could first document its custody and condition, then conduct non-destructive examinations before considering any analysis requiring sampling. The strongest outcome would not be one isolated “authentic” feature but convergence. Paper consistent with the claimed period, a period-appropriate printing process, coherent physical construction, naturally aged components and a traceable history predating the 1994 mailing would reinforce one another. Conversely, one securely demonstrated post-1954 physical component integral to the original production could be far more damaging than several stylistic similarities are supportive.
There is also a crucial difference between dating the artefact and proving its claimed source. Physical tests might show that a manual was genuinely produced in the 1950s without establishing that “Majestic-12” existed or issued it. A convincing authentication would therefore still require provenance — ideally an independently documented connection to government files, personnel or a verifiable archival chain — rather than merely old materials. That is why the missing original should neither be described as proof of forgery nor treated as an incidental inconvenience. Its absence produces a specific evidential ceiling. The photographs allow investigators to ask whether SOM1-01 looks and reads like something that could have been produced in its claimed period. They do not permit the full forensic examination needed to determine whether the photographed physical object itself was actually made then. Until an original with a credible history becomes available, that distinction remains one of the central limitations on any claim to have authenticated SOM1-01.
