What 35 mm Copies Hide From Document Examiners
Because key MJ-12 documents circulated as 35 mm film images, examiners lost physical clues that could help identify how the originals were made.

Introduction
For the core alleged MJ-12 material, typewriter forensics begins with a handicap that cannot be repaired simply by making sharper scans. The Eisenhower Briefing Document and accompanying Truman-Forrestal memorandum reportedly reached Jaime Shandera in December 1984 as images on undeveloped 35 mm black-and-white film, rather than as the physical sheets supposedly produced in the 1940s and 1950s. Researchers therefore had photographs of documents, not the documents themselves.[The UFO Chronicles]theufochronicles.comthe myth of mj 12 appendix pt 1The UFO ChroniclesThe Myth of MJ-12: Appendix A –Pt 1June 29, 2014…
That distinction is crucial. A photographic copy can preserve visible typography well enough to ask useful questions about character design, pitch, spacing and layout. It cannot preserve all the physical evidence that a questioned-document examiner would normally use to determine whether a particular typewriter made a sheet. FBI guidance has long distinguished between identifying the general make or spacing of type from a good photographic copy and identifying a particular machine from its minute defects, for which the original is normally required.[FBI: Law Enforcement Bulletin]leb.fbi.govfebruary 1967Law Enforcement BulletinFEBRUARY 1967May 25, 2026…
The result is an important limit on both sides of the MJ-12 typography dispute: the film can support some arguments about what the typing resembles, but it makes strong claims about the exact machine — and about the physical history of the alleged originals — substantially less secure.
Which physical clues disappear in photographic reproduction
A typewritten original is more than an arrangement of black letter shapes. Each keystroke is a mechanical event. The type element strikes an inked ribbon against paper, and the resulting sheet can retain variations in impact, ink deposition, embossing and tiny defects caused by the machine. Those features can help distinguish broad type style from the much harder question of whether one particular machine produced the document.
Forensic guidance accordingly treats the original as the preferred evidence. The Office of Justice Programs’ summary of an FBI examination guide identifies three principal areas of typewriter analysis: size and spacing, type style, and unique character or alignment defects. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation similarly advises submitting the original typewriter where possible so that laboratory exemplars can be compared with the questioned document.[Office of Justice Programs]ojp.govOpen source on ojp.gov.
A photograph of a page collapses much of that physical information into a two-dimensional image. In the MJ-12 case, that means an examiner working from the 35 mm record cannot directly inspect the alleged original for such things as:
- Strike pressure and impressions. The depth and character of the mechanical strike into the paper are properties of the physical sheet, not simply of its photographed appearance.
- Fine ink behaviour. The examiner cannot directly inspect the original ribbon ink deposited on the fibres or determine its physical relationship with other marks.
- Paper characteristics. Fibre, thickness, ageing, watermark and other substrate evidence require the sheet itself or suitable physical testing.
- Indented writing and other impressions. Pressure marks from writing on sheets above or below can survive on an original and may be developed using specialist methods such as electrostatic detection; a photograph does not preserve the underlying indentation as physical evidence.[Mississippi Department of Public Safety]dps.ms.govOpen source on ms.gov.
- Minute three-dimensional defects. Small damaged-type or alignment characteristics may be visible in a sufficiently good image, but copying can weaken, distort or erase precisely the fine detail needed for individual-machine comparison.
This is why forensic guidance draws a line between classification and identification. An FBI Laboratory article explained that a good, true-size photograph or photocopy may often suffice to determine the make or spacing of type, but is usually inadequate for identification against known specimens because indentations and minute imperfections may not reproduce adequately.[FBI: Law Enforcement Bulletin]leb.fbi.govfebruary 1967Law Enforcement BulletinFEBRUARY 1967May 25, 2026… A specialist questioned-document laboratory makes the same practical distinction: machine-copied material is generally unsuitable for detailed typeprint examination except where font differences are obvious, and conclusions from copies are usually less definitive.[questioneddocuments.com]questioneddocuments.comTypewriter and Typewriting ExaminationsQuestioned Documents - Norwitch Document Laboratory…
For MJ-12, therefore, absence of an original does not make typography useless. It changes the level of question that typography can answer reliably.
What typography can still preserve
The 35 mm route did not erase everything. Photographic reproduction can preserve relatively large, stable features of typing, particularly when the negative and subsequent prints are clear. Those features are the reason the MJ-12 typewriter debate was possible at all.
An examiner can potentially study character proportions and design: the shape of a numeral, the construction of a capital letter, the form of punctuation or other recurring features. Those observations can be compared with known typewriter reference material to ask whether the apparent type style existed by the document’s claimed date. NIST’s forensic resources, for example, list the Haas Typewriter Atlas and related strike-up collections as reference material used in attempts to determine the make and model represented by unknown typewriting.[NIST]nist.govforensic database questioned documents tableForensic Database Questioned Documents Table | NISTJune 3, 2013…
Likewise, photographs can retain horizontal pitch and vertical spacing, provided that the reproduction scale and geometry are understood. They can reveal whether typing resembles Pica or Elite spacing, whether lines and characters show recurring alignment tendencies, and whether visibly different fonts or machines appear to have contributed to a document. FBI guidance specifically treats size, horizontal and vertical spacing, and type style as core components of typewriting examination.[Office of Justice Programs]ojp.govOpen source on ojp.gov.
That explains how apparently contradictory claims could arise around the alleged Truman memorandum. Stanton Friedman’s account says questioned-document examiner Peter Tytell, after receiving copies, believed its typeface was not in use until the 1960s; Friedman stressed that Tytell produced no formal report and later cited James Black’s contrary assessment.[Biblioteca Pleyades]bibliotecapleyades.netBiblioteca Pleyades Update on Operation 'Majestic-12' DocumentsBiblioteca Pleyades Update on Operation 'Majestic-12' Documents Whatever position one takes in that dispute, it illustrates the distinction: the copies contained enough visible information for specialists to debate typeface chronology, but not the full physical evidence of an original sheet.
There is also a second complication. The image itself has a history. The alleged MJ-12 pages were photographed, developed and printed, and later circulated through further copying and digitisation. Each reproduction stage can introduce changes in contrast, scale, sharpness and geometry. Specialist forensic guidance warns that multiple generations of copies can reduce the conclusiveness of document examinations.[questioneddocuments.com]questioneddocuments.comPhotocopy and Photocopier ExaminationPhotocopy and Photocopier Examination
That matters particularly when an argument depends on very small differences. A large, unmistakable difference in font is comparatively robust. A fractionally high numeral, faintly damaged letter or tiny alignment irregularity is more vulnerable to photographic and reproduction effects. The smaller the claimed diagnostic feature, the more carefully an examiner has to separate characteristics of the supposed typewriter from characteristics introduced by photography, printing or later copying.
Why machine identification becomes less certain without originals
There are really two different forensic questions hidden inside the phrase “identify the typewriter”.
The first is class identification: what sort of typewriting system could have produced these characters? An examiner may compare pitch, type style and distinctive letter designs against reference collections and narrow the possibilities to a manufacturer, family of machines or period. Even this is not automatically conclusive — specialist guidance notes that highly definitive make-and-model determinations are uncommon — but a good photograph can contain useful evidence.[questioneddocuments.com]questioneddocuments.comTypewriter and Typewriting ExaminationsQuestioned Documents - Norwitch Document Laboratory…
The second is individual identification: did this particular physical typewriter produce this particular document? That is a much stronger proposition. It relies heavily on recurring individual characteristics such as damaged characters, misalignment, spacing irregularities and other defects, followed by comparison with specimens typed on the suspect machine. The original questioned document is especially valuable at this stage.[questioneddocuments.com]questioneddocuments.comTypewriter and Typewriting ExaminationsQuestioned Documents - Norwitch Document Laboratory…
The 35 mm MJ-12 material makes that second task exceptionally difficult. Even if a candidate typewriter from the relevant office somehow survived, researchers would still be comparing its fresh exemplars with a photographic representation of the disputed typing rather than with the alleged original impressions. Some visible defects might correspond, but the strongest physical comparison would remain unavailable.
There is an additional authenticity problem that reaches beyond identifying the machine. A photographic copy can reproduce the appearance of a composite document. Questioned-document specialists warn that separate pieces of text or signatures can be assembled and then copied so that the resulting reproduction appears to depict a single original sheet; some traces of such construction may survive, but others may not. For that reason, opinions about authenticity based solely on photocopies are normally qualified.[questioneddocuments.com]questioneddocuments.comPhotocopy ForgeryPhotocopy Forgery
That possibility is directly relevant to the MJ-12 controversy because critics have alleged photographic or cut-and-paste construction in connection with the Truman memorandum, including claims concerning its signature. Those claims should not simply be treated as established by the existence of a film copy. The more defensible point is methodological: when the alleged source sheet is missing, an examiner cannot inspect it directly for the physical boundaries, ink relationships and other evidence that could help distinguish an intact original from an assembled image. Accounts of the MJ-12 dispute record precisely this disagreement over whether features visible in reproductions indicate manipulation.[Scribd]scribd.comKevin D. RandleKevin D. Randle
Film creates an evidential ceiling, not a verdict
The loss of the alleged original sheets does not itself prove that the MJ-12 documents are forged. Nor does it protect them from typographical criticism. It imposes an evidential ceiling on what typewriter examination can establish.
A photographic copy may still support a strong negative finding if it clearly preserves an impossible feature. If an unmistakable type design could be securely shown to have originated only after the date printed on the document, the absence of the paper would not magically make that chronological conflict disappear. Similarly, obvious differences in pitch, type style or layout can remain meaningful on a reproduction. That is why the arguments over Pica, Elite and the disputed dating of the Truman memorandum’s typeface remain legitimate areas of examination rather than being automatically invalidated by the film provenance.[FBI: Law Enforcement Bulletin]leb.fbi.govfebruary 1967Law Enforcement BulletinFEBRUARY 1967May 25, 2026…
What becomes much harder is moving from “this resembles type produced by machines of class X” to “this exact machine produced the document”, or from “the image looks internally consistent” to “the physical document was genuinely created in 1947 or 1952”. Those are stronger claims requiring evidence the film does not contain.
The later alleged MJ-12 Special Operations Manual, SOM1-01, illustrates the same problem particularly clearly. It too reportedly surfaced as undeveloped 35 mm film in 1994. Accounts from the pro-authentication side acknowledge that because researchers had film rather than original pages, ordinary physical checks could not be carried out and greater weight had to be placed on content and format.[Special Operations Manual]specialoperationsmanual.comSpecial Operations Manual SourceSpecial Operations Manual Source That limitation is not peculiar to either sceptics or proponents; it follows from the nature of the surviving evidence.
The contrast with the Cutler-Twining memorandum is useful. Unlike the anonymously mailed film images, that disputed memorandum was located as a physical sheet in National Archives holdings. The National Archives records that it was the one MJ-12-related memorandum found during its searches, while also listing several archival anomalies surrounding it.[National Archives]archives.govNational Archives Project BLUE BOOKNational Archives Project BLUE BOOK Its physical existence does not make its MJ-12 implications authentic, but it permits questions about the artefact that simply cannot be asked of a document surviving only as a photographic image.
For the typography debate, that is the central lesson. The 35 mm negatives preserve what the alleged pages looked like. They do not preserve everything needed to reconstruct how the alleged pages were physically made. Typeface chronology and conspicuous spacing can therefore remain useful evidence for or against an MJ-12 document, while exact typewriter attribution, strike-level comparison and full physical authentication must be treated with substantially greater caution.
